SIHH 2019: My Personal Top 3 Watches At This Year’s SIHH

Following Jan’s top 3 ‘Noisemakers’ at SIHH article from yesterday, in this  write-up I’ll share my top 3 personal favorites presented at SIHH 2019. So without further ado, please allow me to share the few that have caught my eye.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel

I think I may have stopped walking in the middle of groceries market when I saw this pop up on my phone.  This is jaw dropping gorgeous and the movement is something I can stare at all day.

A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual TourbillonTourbillon A tourbillon is a complication in a mechanical watch that is designed to improve the accuracy of the watch by compensating for the effects of gravity on the balance wheel and escapement. It consists of a rotating cage that holds the balance wheel and escapement, which rotates on its own axis once per minute. This rotation helps to average out the positional errors caused by gravity, making the watch more accurate [Learn More] Pink Gold Dial

Having been a fan of the German watchmaker, they did not disappoint with this release, limited to 100 pieces with a 41.5mm case and thickness of 14.6mm while housing a perpetual calendarPerpetual Calendar A perpetual calendar is a complication in a mechanical watch that automatically adjusts for the different lengths of the months, including February, and leap years, and (almost) never requires manual adjustments. It has a mechanism that takes into account the different number of days in each month, including leap years, and automatically adjusts the date, day, month and year accordingly [Learn More] and big date display and chronographChronograph A chronograph complication is a feature in a watch that allows the wearer to measure elapsed time in addition to telling the time. It works by having a separate set of gears and levers, called the chronograph mechanism, which is activated by pressing a button or a pusher. The chronograph mechanism starts and stops the chronograph's second hand, which is usually located on the watch's dial, separate from the regular watch hands. The elapsed time is usually displayed on a sub-dial or a register on the watch's dial. [Learn More].

IWC Automatic Top Gun

While the other two watches are probably at the zenith of watch making in terms of complication, movement decoration and dial work.  These two were a bit beyond my mortal human budget.  Now, I have been a big fan of flieger/pilot watches and a fan of the IWC pilot line.  I am glad to see IWC finally producing this watch in their Top Gun line up as this was not available previously.  Beating inside is the new in house caliberCaliber The caliber ('movement') is the heart and engine of a watch. It consists of a number of interconnected components that work together. Energy is transmitted through the gear train, to the escapement mechanism. The escapement mechanism releases this energy in a controlled manner. This drives the gear train, which ultimately rotates the hands of the watch and keeps time. The power reserve of a mechanical watch can vary depending on the size of the mainspring, the efficiency of the gear train, and the rate at which the mainspring releases energy. If a watch has a Power Reserve 'complication' it simply means that the status of the power reserve can be seen on the watch itself (either on the dial or movement side of the watch). [Learn More].

  1. While SIHH isn’t for the faint of heart, the prices on these are mindblowing. Great choice with the IWC pick, the 36mm ones speak to me loud and clear!

  2. Surprised and not surprised by your trio! 🙂 I figured you’d go for the new Lange 1 instead of this one. Was certain about the JLC. And was definitely expecting some Flieger action 😉

    1. That Lange 1 was a strong contender but the chronographChronograph A chronograph complication is a feature in a watch that allows the wearer to measure elapsed time in addition to telling the time.
