LVMH’s recent move to take a minority stake in La Joux Perret is a clear sign the group wants stronger industrial roots in Switzerland. Reuters reported that the deal is meant to deepen long-term ties with key technical partners and secure future movement capacity for brands like TAG Heuer, Zenith and Hublot, while La Joux Perret itself continues to operate independently under Citizen Group.

This is less about rescuing a struggling supplier and more about locking in know-how at a time when movement technology is becoming strategically important.

Compared with this partnership approach, Richemont Group has spent years building its own integrated ecosystem. ValFleurier supplies movements, components and R&D to several of its maisons, which gives the group tight control over quality and innovation. Swatch Group went even further, shaping modern Swiss watchmaking through ETA, Nivarox and a dense network of suppliers that allow it to control almost every step of production. Where Richemont and Swatch built independence through ownership, LVMH is securing it through targeted alliances.

There is no sign that La Joux Perret was in financial trouble. Citizen keeps full control, and both companies describe the deal as a strategic partnership rather than a bailout. LVMH has already been working with La Joux Perret for several years, so formalizing that relationship simply makes sense now. Ten years ago LVMH did not have the same pressure to expand its industrial base, but the landscape has changed. Movement supply is more strategic, brands rely more on innovation, and alternative technologies have moved to the forefront. With this investment, LVMH is strengthening its technical footing in a watch industry where industrial autonomy has become a serious competitive advantage.
And just to be clear, last time I checked, LVMH is certainly not a charity. So while this deal strengthens “Swiss watchmaking ties”, it is safe to assume they are also thinking about long-term profits. Only time will tell how much this move will pay off.
